Karen Emerson Named 2024 Tigard’s First Citizen Award Recipient

Karen Emerson has been selected as the 2024 Tigard’s First Citizen.

This award recognizes someone who has made in-depth, long-term volunteer contributions to the Tigard community over the years. The winner is active, involved, interested and enthusiastic about making Tigard a nice place to live and work. This individual excels in any area of unpaid endeavor of education, social services, youth work, and community improvement of public services. This award is given in the spirit of all volunteers who remain unknown. The recipient joins the ranks of those previously honored in continually striving to improve the Tigard Area.

Karen Emerson has dedicated countless hours to serving the Tigard community, spanning various organizations and initiatives, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to its betterment.

Her contributions are profound and far-reaching here are just a few of them:

Mary Woodward Elementary School:
Pioneered numerous roles within the Parent-Staff Organization (PSO), including Art Lit volunteer, Classroom volunteer, Box Tops Chair, Scrip Chair, Book Fair Chair, and Summer Reading Program Chair. Served as President, overseeing the PSO’s operations and fostering community engagement. Orchestrated successful Auctions, including the transition to Online Auctions, raising crucial funds for school programs and led the initiative for replacing playground equipment, ensuring a safe and stimulating environment for children.

Charles F. Fowler Middle School:
Elevated to the position of President within the PSO, where she orchestrated fundraising efforts and provided administrative support. Demonstrated versatility as Secretary, ensuring smooth communication and organization within the PSO.

Tigard High School:
Contributed to staff appreciation initiatives, recognizing the hard work and dedication of educators and support staff.

The Foundation for Tigard Tualatin Schools:
Played pivotal roles in the Golf Tournament as Treasurer and Registrar, contributing to the organization’s financial stability. Held positions as Vice President and Board Member, guiding strategic decisions and initiatives. Led the Coin Drive, fostering community involvement and financial support for educational programs. Co-Chaired the Art in the Burbs event, promoting local artists and cultural enrichment.

Tigard-Tualatin School District:
Engaged in critical planning committees, including the Long Range Facilities Plan and Strategic Plan committees. Provided leadership as a School Board Director, advocating for student welfare and academic excellence. Played integral roles in multiple Levy and Bond Campaigns, ensuring financial support for educational initiatives.

Family Promise of Tualatin Valley:
Acted as a Founding Committee Member, contributing to the establishment and growth of the organization. Currently serves as Tigard United Methodist Church Site Coordinator, facilitating support programs for families in need.

Just Compassion:
Volunteered for auction committees and provided technical support for online fundraisers, aiding the organization in its mission to alleviate homelessness.

City of Tigard:
Spearheaded Volunteer Coordination and Treasurer roles in various Levy Campaigns, facilitating community engagement and financial transparency. Participated in the Charter Review Committee, contributing insights to improve municipal governance.

Leadership Tigard Class of 2017:
Completed the Leadership Tigard program, furthering her understanding of community dynamics and leadership principles.

Tigard Methodist Church:
Initiated and supported the After School Club, providing a nurturing environment for neighborhood children. Contributed as Secretary of the Trustees committee, ensuring effective management of church resources. Organized Summer Picnics, fostering fellowship and community spirit.

Bethlehem House of Bread (Tigard United Methodist Church):
Led fundraising efforts as Auction Chair, securing vital resources for community outreach programs.

This award will be formally presented alongside other Tigard Volunteer and Business Awards at the upcoming Tigard Shining Stars Community Awards Celebration Presented by Center Street Gold & Silver. The event will take place on Friday, May 10th, from 5:30pm – 10pm at the Embassy Suites Washington Square.
