Tigard Chamber Names 2011 Shining Stars “Jim Nicoli” Tigard Youth Volunteer of the Year
The Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) is pleased to announce that Corey Myers is the 2011 Shining Stars Tigard Youth Volunteer of the Year, named in honor of former Mayor Jim Nicoli, who passed away in 2000. Mayor Nicoli’s dedication to the youth of our community was a fitting way to honor his name and award a youth in our community who volunteers to make a difference. Many young people in Tigard are active in volunteer efforts and it is our pleasure to acknowledge their contributions of dedication, energy and community spirit. They are the future! Corey Myers contributions exemplify these characteristics as he is actively involved in his community primarily with activities surrounding his role as a Senior Cadet in the Tigard Police Force. He has accumulated over 850 hours of community service and has been involved in the following: -80 hours of formal training at the Oregon Cadet Academy in Salem, OR -Bimonthly organized training at the Tigard Police Department -Scheduling and organizing other cadets for all department activities such as Bike Safety and helmet fittings -DARE Camp – Introduces Cadet Program to participants and volunteers at the camp -Traffic Control & Security for Tigard: Parades, runs and all community events like Tigard Festival of Balloons -GREAT Families (Gang Resistance Education and Training) – Socialization & childcare -DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) Take Back: Assists officers in collection of voluntary drug return event -Police shadowing including ride-alongs and sting operations -Participated in the Read & Respond program at Metzger Elementary School during lunch hours. Aside from his community volunteer activities, Corey is a 3 sport student athlete participating in Varsity Water Polo, Ski Racing and Lacrosse at Tigard High School and currently works at Sonic Drive In. He plans to attend Western Oregon University and major in Criminal Justice with a minor in Sociology or Business and would like to become a School Resource Officer as well as a Tactical Negotiations Team operator upon graduation from college. The Jim Nicoli Tigard Youth Volunteer of the Year award will be formally presented at the 2011 Shining Stars Community Awards Banquet sponsored by Platinum Title Sponsor West Coast Bank and held on Saturday, May 7th, 2011 from 6-9 p.m. at Embassy Suites – Washington Square, event location host.
