TACC 2011 Shining Stars Scholarship Award Recipients Named

The Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) is pleased to announce the 2011 Shining Stars Scholarship recipients:Receiving a Pride Disposal and Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce $1500 Scholarship Award
Laree Foster, Tigard High School
Elizabeth Hjort, Tigard High School

Please join us in congratulating these two young women on their scholarship awards.  They were selected from a competitive pool of high caliber applicants.  Applicants were evaluated based on career plans, extracurricular and/or work activities, scholastic achievement and letters of recommendation. Laree Foster’s career goal is to start a non-profit organization that would either be focused on human rights or teenage drug and alcohol abuse.  A well rounded young woman, Laree is Captain of the Girls Golf Team, is involved with Student Council, Amnesty International and throughout her high school career has also been an ASB Officer, a Homecoming Princess, on the Principal’s Advisory Committee, and part of National Honor Society, Ultimate Frisbee Club, and Powder Puff Girls Football.  She is very involved in the community both with her work as a D.A.R.E to be G.R.E.A.T. Camp Coordinator and at Mango Tango Frozen Yogurt, and as a volunteer with numerous organizations.  These include Special Olympics, Community Canned Food Drive, D.A.R.E. Camp Counselor, Oregon Humane Society, Walk for Diabetes and Race for the Roses and Food Service to the Homeless.  Laree has a 3.98 cumulative GPA and plans to attend the University of Oregon in the Fall of 2011 with an intended major of Psychology with a minor in Business Administration. Elizabeth Hjort’s career goal is to become a small business owner in the Portland area, building a community friendly business that benefits local people and is built on the foundations of integrity and trust and is people centric.  Elizabeth is talented in the areas of music and the theatre arts and through her high school career has been a Thespian: Patronage Officer, Concert Choir: Section Leader and Treasurer, a member of Choralation (Advanced Choir), a Piano Student, and a member of National Honor Society.  Elizabeth is also active in the community, working as a Tigard High Technical Crew Member and as a Broadway Rose Intern.  She has volunteered her time at the Tigard Public Library, as a Children’s Ministries Assistant, organized a Coat Drive for needy families in Tigard and donated the coats to Templeton and Tigard Good Neighbor Center.  Elizabeth has a 4.00 cumulative GPA and plans to attend the University of Portland in the Pamplin School of Business Administration. These scholarships are made possible through the generous contribution of Pride Disposal and over 80 other Tigard chamber members.  These scholarship awards will be formally presented at the 2011 Shining Stars Community Awards Banquet sponsored by Platinum Title Sponsor West Coast Bank and held on Saturday, May 7th, 2011 from 6-9 p.m. at Embassy Suites – Washington Square, event location host.
