Ephram Woolsey Named 2024 Tigard Youth Volunteer of the Year

Ephram Woolsey has been selected as the 2024 Tigard Youth Volunteer of the Year! Named in honor of former Mayor Jim Nicoli, who passed away in 2000. Mayor Nicoli’s dedication to the youth of our community was a fitting way to honor his name and award a youth in our community who volunteers to make a difference. Many young people in Tigard are active in volunteer efforts and it is our pleasure to acknowledge their contributions of dedication, energy, and community spirit. They are our future!

Ephram had this to say when asked about his volunteer contributions in our community “Engaging in volunteer work allows me to contribute meaningfully to my community while fostering personal growth and empathy toward others. When I was younger, I assisted in events like street clean-ups, tree plantings, trail maintenance, and beach clean-ups. Additionally, I regularly assist my elderly neighbors with their yard work, helping clean up, or anything else they may need. Through volunteering, as co-president of STUDD (Stop Tigard Underaged Drinking and Drugs), I have been able to see a change happening within my school. In STUDD we help spread awareness to all the kids about the dangers of drinking and doing drugs. We also spread awareness about mental health and wellness in general. One of the ways we do this is by setting up booths at lunchtime. We have different activities to engage those who pass by. One activity involves spinning a wheel and answering a question about the harmfulness of drugs and alcohol. They win a prize whether they get the answer right or wrong. We also organize and participate in various drives. Recently we held a winter clothing drive. We donated all of the clothes we received to the Caring Closet. The activity that everyone gets excited about in STUDD, is when we get to go to an elementary school and talk to and play games with second graders. We help them learn at a young age the difference between what constitutes a good choice and a bad choice. Overall, I like volunteering because it makes me feel better knowing that I was able to help someone and improve the community in many ways.”

Ephram is active in a number of volunteer efforts with the following organizations: Stop Teenage Underage Drinking & Drugs (STUDD), TTSD School Board, Caring Closet, Durham Elementary, Red Ribbon Week, Kindness Week, Tigard High Basketball, Wellness Week, Street Clean Ups, Planting Trees, Camp Cooper, and helping his neighbors and friends and volunteering with his Church.
