Marketing can be one of your largest business expenses, particularly if you’re unknown and just starting off. If your business has a storefront on a well-traveled Main Street, you’re in luck. If not, you have some work to do.

New business owners who haven’t tackled their own marketing before will be shocked at the amount of work needed to be successful at digital marketing (the newfangled kind of marketing that helps people get to know, like and trust you through virtual techniques). It doesn’t seem like there are enough hours in the day.

Henry Ford didn’t invent the automobile. He didn’t invent the assembly line either, but he found a way to use the technology to place cars in the hands of a large percentage of the population who couldn’t previously afford them.

If you have too many customers and you can’t keep up; if your business’ revenue streams are more like Tsunamis, social media is optional for your business. If not, you need to embrace it today. Here’s why:

We are a very mobile society. Businesses can’t count on the foot traffic they once did or people just driving by and stopping in. We’re in our cars, going to the next appointment at lightning speed. There’s no time to just drop in to a new store or business.

The Tigard Chamber since last year has taken an no position on increasing minimum wage in Oregon.  We are concerned about the impact to business, our residents and our economy.  We are opposed to a significant increase in minimum wage for the following reasons.

1.Raising the minimum wage would raise costs for fixed income seniors with no ability to pay for increases

2.Oregon economists estimate increasing Oregon’s minimum wage to $12/hr will cause a reduction of 52,000 jobs statewide

How many social networks is your business active on? How often do you post to a blog? How do the topics you cover on both relate to your newsletters and email campaigns?

Wait. What?

There was a funny email one of my acquaintances shared on social media last week. In it, a person she didn’t know proposed marriage and then in the next sentence suggested, “Maybe we can get to know each other better.”

To any rational person this message seems out of order and out of context. Sadly, I see a lot of businesses take on this same inappropriate, rushed approach to engaging their customers or potential customers, but without the offer of a binding commitment.

At the risk of sounding like an infomercial, if you make just one change to your business in 2016 you’ll open up a new door to an even greater level of success. It’s a very simple concept. You don’t have to go get an MBA or Master’s in marketing.

You simply have to refocus your offerings from you want to say to what your ideal customer wants. Help your customers get what they need.
