The Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) is pleased to announce the 2014 recipients of the Shining Stars Scholarship Award. Each recipient will receive a $1000 scholarship sponsored by Pride Disposal and the members of the Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce. Applicants were judged based on career plans, extracurricular and/or work activities, scholastic achievement and letters of recommendation. Please join us in congratulating the following students for earning this highly competitive scholarship: Timothy Borreca, Tigard High School
Tyler Snyder, Tualatin High School
Kristin Wilcox, Southridge High School
Timothy Borreca is a senior at Tigard High School and is actively engaged in his community. A Senior cadet with the Tigard Police force for over 2 years, Tim volunteers between 12-16 hours per month depending on the time of year. In his tenure as a cadet he has logged more volunteer hours than anyone in precinct history. In combination with his Young Life activities, full time school schedule, and a part time job at Grocery Outlet, Tim has proven that he is a well rounded and committed member of the community. As noted by teachers and the School Resource Officer, Tim is dedicated to hard work, committed to achieving his goals, and is a role model. He is also a focused listener and builds up his peers with kindness and gentleness.
Tim plans to attend Portland State University and major in either Engineering or Architecture as well as attend and gradate from the Police Academy. His long term goal is to work in the field of engineering during the week and volunteer as a reserve officer in his community.
Tyler Snyder is a senior at Tualatin High School and through his exposure and participation in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), has been introduced to the business world. He participated in the FBLA National Convention and placed first at the State Accounting 2 competition. Upon graduating from college, Tyler wants to work for a large construction company or major business and grow into a leadership role.
In addition to his academics and FBLA participation, Tyler is engaged in numerous activities, including Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout), Cross Country, Tennis, Key Club, National Honor Society, Honors classes, and more. He has volunteered with the March of Dimes, Make a Wish, Alberta Rider Elementary, and Salvation Army. Humble, passionate, and driven are words used by advisors and teachers who know him. Tyler has maintained a highly competitive GPA through his high school career in addition to all his other activities and has been in National Honor Society since his freshmen year. He plans to attend Oregon State University and major in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in business, and upon graduation pursue his MBA.
Kristin Wilcox is a senior at Southridge High School. She loves helping people and this is evidenced by what she involves herself in, whether it is being a nanny 45 hours week, teaching Sunday school, serving as a dean for a summer camp for 1st-3rd graders, organizing and then serving as American Sign Language (ASL) club president or serving at a deaf retirement home. In addition to these focus areas, Kristin has also been in National Honor Society since her freshmen year, teaches special needs kids, and is a worship team leader at her church. Teachers and adults around her describe her as a leader who is passionate about ASL and conducts herself with integrity, wisdom and maturity beyond her years. She demonstrates care, kindness and empathy to those around her regardless of age.
Kristin has maintained a 4.0 GPA and her coursework included numerous IB level classes, giving her a weighted GPA of 4.098. She will be attending the University of Oregon where she plans to major in Family and Human Services to prepare for a career in non-profit work, ideally with hearing impaired people or with children.
These scholarships will be formally presented with other Tigard volunteer and business awards at Tigard’s 2014 Shining Stars Community Awards Celebration, sponsored by Platinum Title Sponsor Washington Federal.
