There was a funny email one of my acquaintances shared on social media last week. In it, a person she didn’t know proposed marriage and then in the next sentence suggested, “Maybe we can get to know each other better.”

To any rational person this message seems out of order and out of context. Sadly, I see a lot of businesses take on this same inappropriate, rushed approach to engaging their customers or potential customers, but without the offer of a binding commitment.

At the risk of sounding like an infomercial, if you make just one change to your business in 2016 you’ll open up a new door to an even greater level of success. It’s a very simple concept. You don’t have to go get an MBA or Master’s in marketing.

You simply have to refocus your offerings from you want to say to what your ideal customer wants. Help your customers get what they need.

One of the most frequent complaints about the changes in marketing that have occurred over the last decade is the time required. Yes, you need to engage customers (and employees) but who has the time?
